Jazz rules to be honest, its one of the most complex strands of modern music but personally 'normal jazz' just doesn't cut it for me. For the proper jazz you've got to listen to the sub genre's of post-jazz, avant garde jazz, chaos jazz and jazz fusion.
Seriously, purchase a 1/8th and listen to these albums and you'll explode.
Flying Lutterbachers- any album by them John Coltrane -ascension (the ultimate chaos jam sesh) Miles Davis -pregnant doges brew (get the 4cd box set), live evil, dark magus, black beauty, in a silent way Herbie Hancock -mahawandishi, head hunters, sextant The Necks- mosquito Peter Brotzmann- machine gun (ultimate chaos jazz)
For fusion heads, check out Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forvever, King Crimson, Larry Coryell, Billy Cobham, Soft Machine, Gong, etc. I've got this genre on lockdown

Wouldn't describe it as jazz though (cause it has a standard beat, jazz is great because it doesn't have a standard beat or standard structure, hence why jazz drumming requires so much talent), but its definatly jazzy. The final track off 'la revancha del tango' is probably my favourite, it has a well murky smokey jazz club feel.

I remember seeing Aspects @ Med Bar, and the beatboxer started doing somethin from Headhunters ("watermelon man", i think) .......was totally surreal. Also recommend: Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Roy Hargrove, Cassandra Wilson
